08-OCTOBER-2013 NATIONAL TEAM WITH THE
WORLD
CHAMPIONSHIP ON ITS SIGHT

Men’s National Team, coached by Hugo Silva, continues practicing at the
sporting facilities of the Carolina Michaelis High School, Porto.
This first group of athletes integrates some of the players who took
part in the Junior National Team in the previous years, and who could be
a future option for Hugo Silva and the men’s team.
“The main goal for these first weeks is to study the athletes and to
hurry our preparation. They are young prospects who have the potential
to be called for the Men’s National Team but have yet to show all their
capabilities. At this stage, they’re getting acquainted with the
National Team trainings and game plan, in case they are called up for
the training camp of December to prepare the World Championship
qualification round, in January, and for the World League in May, stated
Hugo Silva, who added:
“We can say that this work is going well. It’s true that the ideal was
practicing more than 1 time per week, but such thing isn’t viable, as we
were taking the athletes away from their clubs”. This first stage
includes National Championship matches observation as well as foreign
championship matches. We want to see all the players available”.
Portugal pursuits a World Championship final round presence since 2002,
when the National Team reached the 8th place at Argentina.
“Maybe it’s the hardest task for a national team, to qualify for a World
Championship final round. Besides the Olympic Games, this competition is
where every player wants to be. We’re aware of that and we know what is
possible to be done. We’re ending a cycle with some veteran athletes and
the team’s renovation will happen. We have nothing to lose, we will try
to qualify and dignify the sport, concluded Hugo Silva.
